Increasingly, the press and scientific literature publish the results of numerous scientific papers that confirm the close relationship between human genes and a number of diseases with which Previously, medicine could not be unequivocally successful. So this time, the combined efforts of American researchers from Oxford University, their European colleagues from the University of London and scientists from Australia has led to the discovery of a link between the presence of a certain gene variation and an increased risk of developing a condition such as stroke. The researchers found that a gene called HDAC9 influenced certain changes in the body of people affected by this acute cerebrovascular accident. This genetic feature causes changes in about ten percent of chromosomes, and people who inherit this gene from their mother or father are twice as likely to be affected from a stroke than those that did not have a variant of this gene.
It is reported that thanks to these same studies, a new method for treating this condition may be developed. As you know, most strokes occur as a result of an artery blockage (ischemic stroke). At the same time, scientists have found that the presence of this gene variant does not affect the risk of blockage in arterial bleeding (hemorrhagic stroke). This was announced by Professor Peter Donnelly, one of the authors of the study from Oxford University, who emphasized that their research revealed various genetic mechanisms effects on various types of stroke. “This is actually an amazing discovery. If we talk about it more globally, we can assume that this discovery will bring us closer to more individualized medicine, when it will be possible to prescribe more accurately treatments and choose measures to stroke prevention for each patient individually,” concluded Professor Donnelly. This discovery is so significant that the results of the research were recently published in the UK's authoritative biological scientific journal in the field of genetics (Nature Genetics).
