Unbelievable facts

Zombies will wipe out humanity in just 100 days. This conclusion was made by researchers from the University of Leicester, predicting a possible apocalypse.

Physics students predicted that if a zombie attacked our planet by the end of 100 days, only 300 people would remain alive on Earth without being infected by a zombie bite. With this number, the re-colonization of our planet is virtually impossible.

The spreading virus will reduce the human race to the point where it will die out on its own (the number of inhabitants of the Earth was taken into account real figures — 7.5 billion people).

Zombie apocalypse scenario

Researchers have put forward a hypothesis that an apocalyptic ending is inevitable. They predicted how long the world's population would be able to hold out until the end of the world. If the scenario simulated by scientists develops, a person will be infected from a zombie bite in 90 percent of cases.

Using the scientifically accepted SIR model, an epidemiological model that describes the spread of the disease throughout the population, they divided the population into 3 categories: susceptible population (S), zombies (Z) and dead men (D).

Experts have identified the stages of zombie life in the following sequence: S, Z, D.

When modeling this scenario, natural fertility and mortality of the population were not taken into account. After all, their number for 100 days is negligible compared to the rapidly spreading zombie bite virus.

Scientists have found out how many infected people will come into contact with uninfected people, as well as how likely it is to transmit the disease from one to another.

In their opinion, just one infected person is enough for a large-scale epidemic to break out, which will begin about 20 days after the first person is infected. Physicists have come to the conclusion that 181 people and approximately 190 million zombies will live on our planet in 100 days.

But even if people try to leave an area infected by the zombie virus, the infection will still spread and defeat humans. By the end of 100 days, fewer than 300 members of the human race and about a million “living dead” will remain on Earth.

The human survival rate will be very low. The authors of the study came to the conclusion that if the “zombie epidemic” lasts for more than 100 days, people will be doomed to extinction.

What to do if a zombie apocalypse comes

Another study by the same physicists has a more encouraging scenario: humans can prolong their species' survival by killing zombies and actively giving birth to children.

Thus, over time, people are less likely to be infected with the zombie virus. A person gets used to taking risks and is already able to face monsters.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the British University of Leicester annually publishes the scientific journal Physics Special Topics. The authors of scientific publications are students of this university.

Dr. Mervyn Roy, a lecturer in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, says that the practice of writing articles for the magazine allows undergraduates to be creative. Students can apply what they have already learned in practice to study strange, unusual or, on the contrary, the most ordinary things and phenomena.

A zombie apocalypse is a fantastic scenario of the end of the world, in which the human race dies out as a result of a deadly virus that is transmitted to humans from a zombie bite. In reality, it is unlikely.

Despite this, researchers continue to carefully study the possibility of a so-called “zombie apocalypse”. Such “doomsday” scenarios help scientists better understand the causes and consequences of outbreaks of deadly diseases in African countries.
