What you think is what you become. What you feel is what you attract. What you imagine is what you create | Buddha
Positive affirmations are vital tools against self-flagellation and negativity.
Affirmations reprogram our brains so we can improve our self-esteem, confidence, self-perception, and problem solving ability.
Moreover, having a positive conversation with ourselves helps us imagine positive events without focusing on negative ones. In the end, this leads to changes in our behavior and ability to overcome any difficulties that come our way.
How to use affirmations
Affirmation is a positive statement that is designed to encourage and inspire, increasing your self-confidence and well-being.
The standard format of affirmations starts with “I…” and ends with a sentence with a positive and affirmative self-belief.
You can use affirmations anytime anywhere, for example:
in the morning after waking up
in the shower
on the way to work
during training
while walking with a dog
while preparing dinner
when you're standing in line
when brushing your teeth
when you're getting ready for bed
Affirmations are fairly easy to use in everyday life, but there are a few rules.
1. Speak in the present tense.
“I” statements have become the basis for most affirmation practices because they are firmly rooted in the present tense.
When you say “I deserve…” you're confirming what you now deserve the way you are without any terms and conditions.
2. Feel positive emotions.
When you say affirmation, focus on positive emotions. You can say them out loud or to yourself, breathe in and feel the words fill your body. The main thing is to try to feel it.
3. Believe
Affirmation works when you really believe what you're saying. In fact, not all affirmations resonate. You don't have to force yourself to repeat it because it's the right way. You'll know when words are right for you by believing in them.
4. Use amendments
You may not be able to say some affirmations confidently without believing them deep down. There's nothing wrong with that.
You can slightly modify the statements so that you feel comfortable saying them.
For example, instead of “I'm beautiful, adorable and radiant”, you can use the phrase “I'm ready to see myself beautiful, amazing and radiant” or “I'm starting to see how beautiful, amazing and I'm becoming radiant.”
