Chartres Cathedral
Its own shade of blue, a mysterious giant maze on the floor and one of the most revered Christian relics — the shroud of the Virgin Mary — few cathedrals in the world can boast such a collection of unique features.
The Picassette House
Such a story could happen anywhere and, of course, has happened more than once: a person suddenly took to decorating his own home with improvised materials. But, having happened in Chartres, this story caused the appearance of a new city landmark, quite popular among tourists.
Maintenon Castle
This stunning chateau, which was rebuilt into a medieval castle, is located about 20 km north of Chartres, in the town of Maintenon. The chateau became most famous as the private residence of the second famous favorite of Louis XIV, Madame de Maintenon.
Chartres International Stained Glass Center
The Chartres Museum of Stained Glass is located 50 m from the cathedral and occupies an old house built in half-timbered technique, a former barn. The expositions are placed in a colorful Gothic cellar, where wine used to be stored.
Chartres Art Museum
The Chartres Art Museum can be accessed by passing through the gate next to the north portal of the cathedral. It occupies the former bishop’s palace, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum’s collection is quite rich and consists of works of art from a wide time period.
Saint-Aignan Church
Against the background of the monumental cathedral, other churches of Chartres are easy to ignore, and this would be a big mistake. The church of Saint-Aignan is the oldest in the city: the original structure dates back to about 400. It was built under the bishop, whose name it was later named after.
