What do you think about when you're driving down the road? The cars of the future will be able to “connect” to these thoughts. Thus, scientists say, it will be safer both for humans and for all traffic on the road. How is this possible?

The technology of the future is based on a new brain-machine interface, which is being explored for the first time at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. The system allows wheelchair users to control cars with their thoughts.

The researchers announced their intention to work with Nissan to develop a similar technology that would combine cars and drivers. “The idea is to “mix together” the intellectuals of the driver and the vehicle in such a way as to avoid conflict between them,” says the project's lead researcher Jose Del Millan ( Jose del Millan). According to him, this will make cars less dangerous to the environment.

The system will measure and assess brain activity, eye movement, and vehicle surroundings in order to predict driver actions. For example, a driver wants to turn left or join another row – the system assesses the situation and tells the person how to act.

The idea of a car that helps drivers on the road is not entirely new. Earlier this year, a group of German researchers announced their development – their car turns left and right using brain waves.
