The benefits of sun exposure are far greater than the risk of skin cancer, scientists say.

Researchers at the University of Edinburgh say that sunlight lowers blood pressure, reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, and prolongs life.

They found that ultraviolet rays produce a substance that lowers blood pressure.

Scientists explained that vitamin D supplements alone cannot compensate for the lack of sunlight.

The production of nitric oxide, a compound that lowers blood pressure, occurs separately from vitamin D production and increases after exposure to sunlight.

Until now, vitamin D production was considered the only benefit of sun exposure on human health.

During the study, dermatologists examined the blood pressure of 24 volunteers when exposed to ultraviolet rays and infrared lamps.

The results showed that blood pressure dropped significantly an hour after exposure to ultraviolet rays, but not to heating lamps.

Dr. Richard Weller, who conducted the study, believes that the heart health benefits of sunlight outweigh the risk of skin cancer. If this is further confirmed, experts will have to revise their recommendations regarding sun exposure.

How to sunbathe properly?

Since strong exposure to ultraviolet radiation is associated with the risk of skin cancer, experts recommend limiting the time spent in the sun.

– Use a sunscreen with a protection factor (SPF) 30 half an hour before going outside and again after a few hours of sun exposure

– Wear UV-protected sunglasses

– Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

– Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated

– Wear a hat and light-colored clothes made from natural materials.
