Health

Our citizens have long been familiar with all kinds of fast foods and eateries that offer a huge range of delicious but very unhealthy food. Fast food restaurants have gained similar popularity in China over the past decades, gradually replacing the traditional oriental cuisine of locals and replacing it with Western cuisine. Such changes could not but affect the health of the Chinese population — over the past ten years, the level of type 2 diabetes in this country has increased to a critical level. According to official data alone, 92.4 million Chinese suffer from this disease.

Meanwhile, the study, the results of which were recently published in an authoritative scientific source called the European Journal of Clinical Investigation, gives Chinese people some hope that things will change for the better thanks to… coffee. According to published data, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes is 63 percent lower for those Chinese who consume at least seven cups of coffee a week. These findings are based on a study involving 2,332 Taiwanese residents — men and women over 40 years of age.

Diabetes was diagnosed in 14 per cent of men and 10.4 per cent of women. Among the factors that influenced the level of diabetes, scientists recorded general health, nutrition, physical activity level, income level, and even education. At the same time, it was noted that blood glucose levels fell as coffee consumption increased. Just one cup of coffee a week reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 33 percent; up to six cups a week by 54 percent.

Let us recall that until recently, the mechanism of the effect of coffee on the level of type 2 diabetes was not fully understood. It is now believed that coffee may help reduce the risk of diabetes due to its magnesium content, which is known to improve glycemic control and insulin resistance. In addition, the drink has an effect on weight loss and restores the body's energy consumption, which is also important not only for Chinese people suffering from diabetes, but also for other residents of our country planets suffering from this disease.
