Incredible facts
What are your reasons for choosing a perfume? You probably think you're just choosing a scent you like. This is partly true. But why do we like this or that smell? The point is that people choose a fragrance that accentuates or enhances their own body scent. The smell of perfume, mixed with body odor, becomes especially pleasant for others. In the same case, when a person uses a perfume that someone has chosen for him, the aroma of this perfume does not seem so attractive to others. This conclusion was made by researchers at Charles University in Prague after conducting an experiment.
Scientists brought together a group of 12 men and asked them to apply a perfume they like to one armpit and another randomly chosen fragrance to the other. The experts then took swabs from the armpits and asked a group of women to assess the smell of the samples obtained. As a result, it turned out that the smells that the participants in the experiment chose for themselves were the most attractive for women.
Dr Jan Havlicek, study leader, comments on the findings: “People have been using perfumes for thousands of years. It is believed that the main purpose of using perfumes is to “disguise” your own body odor in order to smell more attractive. In fact, this is not the case at all. We do not mask our own body odor; on the contrary, we emphasize it with perfume. That is why it is very difficult to find a perfume as a gift.”
There is another interesting point of view about choosing perfumes. Professor Tim Jacob, an odor expert from Cardiff University, believes that the human immune system influences the choice of perfumes. The professor says that a person's body odor is determined by their immune system. People tend to reject the odors of those who have a different immune system.
“There is a statistical relationship that shows that there is a relationship between our immune type and the odors we prefer. More often than not, we choose a fragrance that matches our immune system,” says the professor.
