A study was conducted at a university in Sydney in Australia, the results of which showed that In many ways, a person's personality traits determine his position at work and what he will eventually come to, rather than his level of education or parents' occupation.

People in managerial positions are more open to gaining new knowledge, to gaining new experience, they are more conscientious, but it is much more difficult to achieve with them compromises, especially on issues of paramount importance.

Employees are the most conscientious, but they are less open to change; as for salespeople, they have the largest percentage of extroverts and people who are easy to contact. Office workers rank last in terms of integrity, but they have the highest level of emotional stability.

“Personality traits are a combination of genes and upbringing, and they are usually formed before the age of 12,” said Robert Wells, one of researchers whose doctoral dissertation was written on this particular topic. “At age 30, personal characteristics are stable. The results of the study show that there is a direct relationship between them and between the results of work, that is, they mainly affect what a person comes to as a result of their efforts”, he added.

This study was based on a wide range of data from Australia's national survey, which included information on family income and development dynamics labor market in the country, etc. In total, the survey covered more than 20,000 people.

The survey focused mainly on the distribution of the role of 5 characteristics among people with different positions in society, namely, they studied: openness to experience, conscientiousness, emotional stability, contact, as well as checking whether a person is extra or introverted.

“This research can help policy makers as well as employers and employees,” Wells said. “A broad study of personality based on this five-factor model is very important and can draw conclusions with almost 100 percent accuracy regarding the expected effects of professional activity”.
