Due to global warming, more and more attention is being paid to environmentally friendly products. They are trying to replace all materials that harm the environment, including fuel. But scientists have found that environmentally friendly fuels are more harmful to the planet than conventional fossil fuels.
Britain is going to increase the share of biofuel sales, which will lead to the need to burn millions of acres of forest to plant plantations, but there is no positive effect is foreseeable. As a result of the study, it turned out that when using palm oil instead of fossil fuels, the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere increases by 31 percent, which is not meets the standards put forward by the European Commission. According to its regulations, every liter of biofuel was supposed to reduce harmful emissions by 35 percent.
The European Commission hopes to continue the work, and its members have issued a new set of rules according to which palm oil will be considered ecological if it comes from places where trees are constantly planted. The vault states that trees up to 5 meters high, with a crown of more than 30 percent of the height, should grow in such forests. The draft set of rules states the following: “This means that, for example, a transition from forests to palm plantations would not in itself violate this criterion.”
When forests are burned to plant plantations, carbon from trees and soil is released. It will take 840 years for palm plantations to absorb it!
But that's not all: the destruction of Sumatra's forests is causing the island's orangutan population to disappear. Plantations account for four times as much land as the natural habitat of orangutans.
