Dryland farmers are already using a new method of dealing with drought and increasing their yields. An unusual invention came to their aid: a special powder that can absorb water.
The miracle powder, called Solid Rain, looks like sugar. It is made of a special absorbent material called potassium polyacrylate and is able to absorb an incredible amount of water, 500 times the volume of the material itself. One liter of water is absorbed into 10 grams of Hard Rain, turning into a dense transparent gel.

Water that has been absorbed into the polymer can remain in it for a year, while it does not evaporate at all. Plant roots are able to absorb water from the material when placed in the soil.
Hard rain was invented by Mexican chemical engineer Sergio Gizez Rico Velasco. Initially, he wanted an absorbent material that could be used in diapers to absorb large amounts of liquid in a small space.

Velasco realized that a potassium-based polymer could be used to combat the Mexican drought. Today, Hard Rain sells for $50 per kilo. According to Modern Farmer magazine, Mexican authorities conducted a study testing the effects of Hard Rain over a single season in the semi-arid region of Hidalgo.
Using Hard Rain, it was possible to increase yields by 300 percent. Thanks to the new material, Velasco recently received a special award. However, the material is not yet widely available.
