Daily oral contraceptives – pills may soon be replaced by… gel. The gel has much in common with other contraceptives and it works almost like them. In addition, women who used the gel did not experience side effects. Unlike tablets, the gel is also safe for nursing mothers.
Thus, the gel is applied to the skin of the shoulders, arms, legs or abdomen daily. Like a contraceptive patch, the gel lets hormones through the skin. The lotion releases progesterone and estrogen hormones every day, preventing the maturation and release of eggs – this is how traditional pills work.
Eighteen women took part in the test experiments. They used the gel for seven months. None of them became pregnant during this time.
