December 21, 2021 is the winter solstice
Every year, people around the world celebrate the Winter Solstice, the first day of astronomical winter in the northern hemisphere, which is the shortest day and longest night of the year.
This is the time when the Sun reaches the southernmost point of its orbit, and one of the Earth's poles is most tilted towards the Sun, which leads to winter for us and summer for the Southern Hemisphere.
This year's winter solstice will take place on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at 6:59 p.m. PDT (3:59 p.m. UTC).
After this day, daylight hours start to increase and days get longer. The winter solstice literally marks the middle of winter, as well as the end of the year.
From the point of view of astrology, December 21 marks the transition of the Sun to the zodiac sign Capricorn, where it will stay until January 19.
