Unbelievable facts
Colombia's largest baby, who weighs as much as a 6-year-old at 8 months, has recently been put on a diet.
Santiago Mendoza is severely obese and weighs 19.7 kilograms. Although he appears to be a happy child, he has already been hospitalized several times and needs medical treatment.
Local media called the baby the fattest in Colombia. The boy was recently taken by a charitable organization after his mother asked for help. His mother, Eunice Fandiño, admitted that the baby's condition was partly the result of her ignorance.

She said that the baby was born healthy and the woman fed him every time he cried, which made him unhealthy.
Doctors will try to reduce the child's weight before performing a series of surgeries.

“Otherwise, in the future he will suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and joint problems,” said the organization's director.

Doctors mentioned that the only cause of obesity they found in the child was overfeeding. Santiago will now be put on a strict diet to reduce his weight to 7.7 kg and begin treatment.

However, they clarified that the boy would need longer treatment and a healthy lifestyle with physical activity and low-fat foods to maintain his health.

In Colombia, the incidence of childhood morbid obesity is increasing, and two out of five children are at an unhealthy weight.

Obesity in children
Children become overweight for a variety of reasons. Here are the most common ones:
· Malnutrition
· Overeating and eating disorders
· Lack of physical activity
· Obesity in the family
· Endocrine and neurological disorders
· Medications (e.g. steroids)
· Stress (parental divorce, relocation, death of a loved one)
· Family and peer problems
· Low self-esteem
· Depression and other emotional problems
Obesity increases the risk of several diseases, including high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, bone and skin problems.

To determine if your child is obese, you need to calculate the body mass index by measuring the child's weight and height and comparing the result with the norm.
