Sultan Qaboos Mosque
This mosque is the main one not only in Muscat, but also in the entire Sultanate of Oman. Meanwhile, it was built quite recently. In 1992, Sultan Qaboos decided that by the 30th anniversary of his rule, his country needed a Large Mosque, and the following year a competition was announced for the best architectural project.
Al-Jalali Fort
Fort Al-Jalali or Al-Sharqiya is located in the harbor of the old city of Muscat. It was built by the Portuguese at the end of the 16th century to protect the harbor, after Muscat was sacked twice by Ottoman troops.
Al-Alam Palace
This building has a rather non-festive appearance in Muscat, frankly speaking, does not look too much like a ceremonial sultan’s palace (in particular, in contrast to the monumentality and splendor of the Great Mosque).
Royal Opera of Oman
Oman’s main musical and cultural venue, the Opera House is located in the Shati Al-Kurm area of Muscat. The opera was built by royal decree of Sultan Qaboos and serves as an excellent example of modern Omani architecture.
Matrah-Corniche
Matrah (sometimes called Old Muscat) was once a separate town near Muscat, and today it is one of the most interesting areas of the city from a tourist point of view. Firstly, the famous market is located here, where buyers from all over Oman and tourists from almost all over the world come.
