A new study shows that drinking red wine can help stop visual impairment. Experts have found that a special substance found in grapes and some other fruits protects eye blood vessels from damage caused by the natural aging process.

This substance is really effective due to the fact that it contains the component resveratol, which saves blood vessels from the harmful effects of time.

The substance, which was previously known as a way to slow down aging and protect against cancer, also works in this direction, according to scientists, due to the fact that it protects from abnormal angiogenesis (formation of damaged or mutated blood vessels).

Abnormal angiogenesis, in turn, leads to cancer, heart disease, and eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. Dr. Rajendra Apte, who conducted the study at the University of Washington School of Medicine, noted that the analysis is bound to have a significant impact on our understanding the work of resveratrol.

He also noted that during the study, he was able to demonstrate that resveratrol, a naturally produced component, can directly inhibit the appearance and formation of “wrong” vessels inside and outside the eye. At the same time, the professor added that this finding could lead to new methods of treatment.

Resveratrol is a natural compound produced by various plants to prevent bacterial and fungal infections. A particularly high concentration of the element was found in grape skin (and therefore in red wine), and lower concentrations were found in blueberries, peanuts and other plants.

Various studies have shown that resveratrol helps to stop the aging process and protects against the development of cancer.

It is also worth noting that red wine has recently received a lot of attention from various researchers due to its proven health benefits.

Along with reducing the risk of stroke, moderate wine consumption is associated with a decrease in the development of cardiovascular diseases — the so-called French paradox. Despite the French diet, which includes a large amount of foods with high levels of saturated fat (butter, cheese, etc.), they are much less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases , so for many of them, moderate consumption of red wine is a habit.
