A magical, amazing, versatile remedy — cosmetic, health, prophylactic — that can be bought at any pharmacy for mere pennies. Does it seem impossible?
However, this is how many ordinary people and even doctors characterize castor oil or castor oil, bearing in mind the specific properties of this substance. Which of these things are true and which are exaggerations? Not as an advertisement, but to get to the bottom of the truth — objectively about castor oil!
The properties of castor oil

It is interesting that young people often did not hear anything about castor oil at all. This is due to two factors: firstly, young people are less likely to get sick, so it makes no sense for them to look for a cheap panacea; secondly, drug advertising, which has flooded the entire media space, constantly promotes expensive modern drugs.
But the older generation knows about castor oil firsthand. And not only because of such pillars of Russian culture as Chekhov or Marshak, who mentioned castor oil in their works. Castor oil was mandatory in almost every home medicine cabinet. And it was used in ancient times, considering castor oil almost a remedy for all diseases.
Now let's list the properties of castor oil. But first, let us emphasize that this is one hundred percent natural product, that is, vegetable oil. Castor oil is obtained by pressing the fruit of a plant called castor oil. It grows almost all over the world, including Russia. Most of the fruit structure of this plant is made up of fats (vegetable fats, of course).
– One of the unique properties of castor oil is that castor oil does not dry out, but it does not form a film.
– Castor oil is not hygroscopic, that is, it does not absorb moisture from the air.
– Castor has a rather specific smell, which initially seems unpleasant. But if this product is used regularly, then you can get used to the unpleasant smell.
– Castor oil does not have an aggressive effect on the skin. Accordingly, it does not corrode rubber either; thanks to this, by the way, castor-based products were once used as special fluids for car brakes.
– Castor oil is a part of so many ointments and creams. For example, castor oil is an essential ingredient in Vishnevsky's ointment.

– Due to its excellent lubricating properties, castor oil has an excellent anti-corrosion effect.
– Castor oil is considered to have the highest viscosity coefficients among all vegetable oils.
– Castor oil, used for medical purposes, has a fairly long shelf life of five years. Many argue that even after that it does not particularly lose its properties, it only acquires a specific rancid taste. However, instructions developed by the Ministry of Health do not recommend using the oil after the expiration date. And is it worth saving on a penny product?
– Castor oil is a source of vitamin E; however, this product does not contain carbohydrates, proteins and minerals.
These are, in fact, all the properties in general terms that are worthy of mention. It should only be added that the basis of castor oil is esters of several types of fatty acids (including ricinoleic (80% of the composition), linoleic, oleic, oleic, and so on). It is noteworthy that the ricin contained in the castor seed kernel is an extremely toxic substance.
For people who are far from chemistry, this information is unlikely to say anything. However, many who have become familiar with the few properties of castor oil may have a well-founded question — and what is so unusual about it? After all, in fact, it is an ordinary vegetable oil, more like a lubricant.

Well, then let's move on directly to the medical and cosmetic use of castor oil. At the same time, we will not limit ourselves to unfounded allegations, but will try to prove the justification of using castor oil for various purposes. But first of all…
Who discovered castor oil?
It is impossible to say exactly when people discovered the amazing properties of castor oil, guessing to use it for their many needs. However, it is absolutely certain that castor oil is mentioned in the famous medical treatise of ancient Egypt, the Ebers Papyrus.
This oldest medical manuscript indicates that castor oil has been actively used for several centuries even before the manuscript itself was written! A well-known American organization, the Food and Drug Administration, has recognized castor oil as a “safe and effective” over-the-counter laxative.
Americans also made a huge contribution to popularizing the use of castor oil. And the most significant contribution was the contribution of American professor and practicing physician Jarvis Deforest Clinton (1881-1966), who studied the effect of numerous traditional medicines on the human body.
The use of castor oil
Castor oil is a laxative
Indeed, castor oil is most often prescribed as a laxative for constipation. Actually, due to this property, castor oil initially gained great popularity.
The fact is that our pancreas produces an enzyme called lipase. One of its functions is to help digest fats. The reaction that occurs when castor acid fats interact with lipase leads to the release of the same ricinoleic acid that acts on the intestines as an irritant.
Due to the specific properties of this acid, castor oil causes intestinal irritation, and throughout its entire length! The effectiveness of the drug is amazing – the resulting reflex increase in the contraction of the intestinal walls (that is, increased peristalsis) invariably solves the problem of constipation.
How to use castor oil against constipation?
Castor does not act immediately, but after a while. According to existing recommendations, oil should be taken one hour before meals, or 2-3 hours after meals. Keep in mind that castor oil is a very powerful tool! And here it is extremely important to comply with the dosage.
In general, it is recommended to assume that 1 gram of castor oil is needed per kilogram of weight. Take the medicine once a day for three days. It should be noted here that castor oil is not used if constipation is prolonged or the cause of constipation is mechanical intestinal obstruction! In this case, you need to see a doctor, look for the cause of the problem, and prescribe individual treatment.
By the way, for short-term constipation, one tablespoon of castor oil is enough, which should be taken before going to bed. So to speak, the side effect of this treatment is that castor oil literally within a matter of hours frees the intestines from various toxins and toxins.

However, it is impossible to specifically cleanse the body with castor oil, taking it in the above doses in the absence of constipation. For this, there is another recipe and method of use, which we will talk about later. As for castor oil against constipation, this type of treatment requires some preparation.
It's not that complicated, really. For treatment to be effective, it is necessary to change your so-called eating behavior three days before taking castor oil. You should eat healthy, you should follow the rules of fractional nutrition (that is, at least five meals a day, in small portions).
Castor oil for children with constipation
Castor oil should not be given to children under 12 years of age. If the child is younger, then a pediatrician must be prescribed to treat constipation with castor oil. Children over 12 years of age should be given one teaspoon of castor oil once a day. This is about 5 grams of medication.
The medicine should be given either at night or 30 minutes before meals. In some cases, it makes sense to triple the amount of castor oil, to 15 grams.
Warning!
When it comes to constipation in a child, it makes sense to try to get by with softer remedies! To give castor oil, serious reasons are needed, so consulting with pediatricians in such cases will not be superfluous.
The reason is not only that the drug has a strong enough effect. Castor oil itself tastes quite nasty (yes, all healthy drugs usually taste terrible!). Even adults are advised to drink it in one gulp to suppress the gag reflex. And children do not always succeed.
However, the taste of castor oil can, as they say, be interrupted. To do this, some experts recommend drinking butter with milk. You can also make tea with ginger. In any case, a large amount of fluid is needed, since after ingestion, constipation can be replaced by temporary diarrhea, which is known to lead to severe loss of body fluids.
Castor oil to cleanse the body
It is one thing to use castor oil in shock doses to combat constipation. The associated effect is really expressed in cleansing the intestines and from toxins. However, castor oil cannot be used in such doses solely to cleanse the body of toxins, since as a result, not only accumulated “dirt”, but also beneficial bacteria, are washed out of the body.
At the same time, a well-known fact is that polyunsaturated acids contained in castor oil contribute to the so-called lipid metabolism in cells. In simpler terms, castor oil helps improve the body's metabolism at the cellular level. And this leads to an improvement in the function of our liver.
Castor oil for the intestines
A healthy intestine is normal digestion. Good digestion almost always means great skin. And it doesn't matter at all what size a person is! Cleansing the body of toxins and toxins is inextricably linked to the metabolic processes that take place within us.

To decide whether castor oil can become part of your personal diet, you should consult a specialist. By the way, when it comes to dietary nutrition, it is obvious that foods such as fatty meat, salt, sugar, and alcoholic beverages should be excluded (or significantly limited) from the diet.
In order to gradually cleanse the intestines without disturbing the internal balance of substances in the body when taking castor oil, it is necessary to take 1-2 capsules (this medicine is also available in this form) 3 times for a day. Capsules should be taken with meals. At the same time, the course of treatment can reach one month. The patient's minimum age is 12 years.
Castor oil for calluses
One of the biggest problems that concerns many of us is the presence of calluses and corns. Even children suffer from these troubles! Often, this problem is not paid attention until there is only one way to combat calluses and corns – surgery.
In fact, castor oil can make our lives much easier. To do this, it is necessary to lubricate the skin of the feet and toes with castor oil twice a day – in the morning and at night. The effectiveness of castor oil for fighting calluses and corns was proved by the same Jarvis Deforest Clinton, whom we mentioned earlier.
However, castor oil's possibilities are not limited to this. Often, due to uncomfortable shoes, we have microcracks in the skin, small wounds, and sores. In this case, Jarvis also recommends treating problem areas with ordinary castor oil. At the same time, the scientist relied on the results of his own research, of which he, as a practicing physician, had many.
Castor oil for age spots and freckles
Many people think freckles are cute. Maybe this is true when skin pigmentation is quite moderate. However, very often freckles merge into an unsightly cluster of pigment spots. Something similar can be observed on the skin of elderly people, whose skin is covered with so-called senile buckwheat.
Such changes are due to various reasons that lead to the instability of a pigment such as melanin. For example, “senile buckwheat” on the hands occurs due to a spasm of small arteries that make up skin cells (arterioles). Because of this phenomenon, the antioxidant mechanisms of cells are stopped.
By the way, vitiligo, which is characterized by the disappearance of melanin in certain skin areas, is also due to arteriolar spasm. This very spasm can be relieved with castor oil, which triggers self-regulation processes in cells.
How to use castor oil for skin pigmentation
Apply oil heated to body temperature (just hold the jar in your hands for a while), apply to a cotton swab, and then fix it on a problem area, for example, an ordinary one with a band-aid. This procedure should be done twice a week, leaving the tampon overnight.
If you have very oily skin, then it is enough to repeat this treatment once a week. If the skin is hypersensitive, then castor oil should not be used in its pure form. For this purpose, you can mix castor oil and sea buckthorn oil in equal proportions. The effect will not be so quick and pronounced, but your skin will remain safe and sound.
Castor oil for dry skin

Dry skin occurs due to impaired blood circulation in skin cells. Reduced blood circulation leads to a slowdown in cellular metabolism. Cells with reduced metabolism begin to divide more slowly, so old cells are replaced by new ones less often than before.
The mechanism that makes castor oil work in this case is quite similar to the mechanism that allows castor oil to fight pigmentation disorders with castor oil. The oil relieves spasm not only of arterioles, but also of spasm of blood vessels, through which oxygenated blood flows from capillaries to veins (venules).
How to use castor oil for dry skin
You can remove dry skin and smooth out wrinkles with a mixture of olive oil and castor oil. You can also add a bit of peach oil to the solution, which will give the product the aroma of a cosmetic product. The solution must be heated in a water bath, and then applied to problem areas. You can wash off the mixture after a quarter of an hour.
This procedure can be repeated twice a day. If the skin is very dry, then it is recommended to make a cream from castor oil, diluting them in a ratio of one to two. The cream is applied to problem areas, after which it is allowed to soak in. You do not need to wash off the cream, but you can soak the excess with a napkin.
Castor oil for warts and papillomas
Wart, like papilloma, are benign neoplasms that are the most common microorganisms. In order for these microorganisms to die, it is necessary to cut off the oxygen they receive. This is done using castor oil, but in a specific way.
How to use castor oil for warts and papillomas
In order to get rid of neoplasms, castor oil must be rubbed into the wart or papilloma for a certain time. At the same time, it is not the strength with which you will rub castor oil (otherwise you can cause irritation!) , and the duration of exposure. It should be 20 minutes.
Isn't this approach similar to what many of us do with a tick that has dug into our bodies? The bite site is also treated with oil (and it may well be castor oil), after which the insect, having died from lack of oxygen, slowly falls off by itself (ideally).
Castor oil for eyelashes
Do you want long lashes? Lubricate the upper eyelid with castor oil at night. This advice has been given by mothers to their daughters in India, Russia, China, the United States and many other countries since time immemorial. And if you are not lazy, but regularly treat your eyelids with castor oil, the result will show itself in a month, which is quite good for naturally increasing the volume of eyelashes.
How to treat eyelashes with castor oil
Apply castor oil, which does not contain alcohol, to the eyelashes of the upper eyelid exactly as mascara is applied — that is, from the tip of the eyelid to the tips of the eyelids. Treat your eyelashes at night two or three times a week, and wash your eyes with warm water in the morning. Spring and autumn treatment courses are recommended (two to three months in each season).

The treatment of eyelashes with castor oil has another very unexpected, but very pleasant and useful bonus. Willy-nilly, some of the oil falls not only on the upper eyelid, but also into the eyes. This is an excellent prevention of eye diseases such as cataracts and glaucoma. Moreover, there is a treatment method that allows one drop to be instilled into each eye for inflammatory processes in the eye mucosa.
This procedure helps relieve vasospasm, which is often the precursor to cataracts and glaucoma. By the way, if you work constantly at the computer, you should also lubricate your upper eyelid at night; now you know that if a little castor oil gets into your eye, it's okay. But it is important to first make sure that you are not allergic to castor oil by applying a small amount of oil to your eyelid.
Warning!
Some people may show individual intolerance to castor oil acids, so it is recommended to treat the eye with an extremely dosed dose for the first time. If there is an allergy – itching, redness, burning – you must stop treatment.
You may have very sensitive skin, so pure castor oil is not good for treating eyelashes. Then it makes sense to make a mixture of castor oil with olive, burdock or almond oil in a ratio of one to one. Preheat the ingredients in a water bath to ensure they are thoroughly mixed.
Castor oil for hair growth
If it is necessary to stimulate hair growth, we also turn to castor oil for help. The method of use is simple – you need to rub the oil into the scalp overnight. Actually, the principle of action is exactly the same as when using castor oil to stimulate eyelash growth.
If there is no individual intolerance, this procedure is quite safe. Castor masks were made even for babies, rubbing oil into their heads, after which they put on a heated hat (for example, a heated iron). All these manipulations improve the contact of castor oil with the capillary network, which improves blood supply to the hair follicle (that is, the hair follicle).
Castor oil should be neutralized with an alkaline medium
As mentioned above, castor oil is an acid. Long-term exposure to castor oil stimulates hair growth, but can disrupt the acid-base balance on the skin surface. Therefore, in the morning, the oil should be washed off with alkaline soap or shampoo.
It is quite easy to make a hair mask. Pour some oil into the bowl (you should focus on the eye, depending on the thickness of the hair). It should be heated in a water bath.
Rub the oil initially into the roots, gradually moving to the ends of the hair (with regular use, you will forget about split hair).
It is recommended to do this mask once a week for two to three months. More often, it is not advisable, since hair can get used to the oil, which will reduce the effect of its effect. Then put on your hat. You can try to leave it overnight. In any case, the minimum exposure time should be at least 40 minutes. It is not easy to wash off the oil, but lush healthy hair is worth the effort.
Additional benefits of castor oil

So, we got acquainted with the most popular ways to use castor oil. However, the range of uses of castor oil is much wider. Moreover, in most cases, it is the superficial effect that occurs. And let this look like a panacea! If only it would work, wouldn't it?
However, there are individual obstacles in the form of an allergic reaction to castor oil. In this case, it is recommended to use this oil as an additive. Any other oil can be basic or basic — almond, olive, and so on (it all depends on your taste and habits).
– A mixture with castor oil is the basis for deep cleansing of the skin; however, for dry skin, the castor oil content should be no more than 10 percent. In normal skin, the castor oil content is 20 percent, the rest is base oil. For oily skin, use at least 30 percent castor oil.
You can use this mixture one to three times a week (all individually, so choose your own personal skin cleansing regime). Rub the mixture with massaging movements for two or three minutes, and then slowly remove the oil from your face with a sufficiently warm damp towel soaked in hot water and a pinch of salt dissolved.

Here are a few more cases that castor oil can cope with (or relieve symptoms).
– In bronchitis, castor oil is rubbed into the chest. In this case, castor oil should be mixed with turpentine in a ratio of one to one. Such compresses immediately provide alkalization.
– For headaches, you can also use a castor oil compress with turpentine.
– For sore throat, use the same compress at night.
– Castor oil can be applied to scars to smooth them; castor oil also helps with cuts and scratches.
– Castor oil is suitable for muscle and joint pain, arthritis.
– Use castor oil for nails: you can rub castor oil into the skin around the nail and into the nail itself, or you can make a solution heated in a water bath. Mix castor oil with another two or three types of vegetable oil so that approximately 80 milliliters of the mixture are obtained. Add a few drops of iodine. Make baths by dipping your fingertips into the solution for a quarter of an hour.
– In case of hemorrhoidal disease or a fissure in the rectum, it is recommended to lubricate the anus before defecating.
There are many more ways to use castor oil for various ailments, as well as as a cosmetic product. Even such a topic (quite controversial) as childbirth under castor oil is known. However, the use of castor oil is not limited to medicine. This product is also used in everyday life.
– Castor oil can be used to care for leather goods (shoes, gloves, jackets). It is recommended to make a universal care cream based on a mixture of castor oil, fish (or goose) oil and wax. The mixture creates an excellent water-repellent barrier and adds shine (just wait until it is completely absorbed).
The harm of castor oil
Is it possible that among all the advantages of using castor oil described above, can you find at least some disadvantages from using this product? And can castor oil really be harmful or even dangerous to health? Castor oil can really be dangerous, although this is more about contraindications and overdoses (which, by the way, is also very important to know).

© Luminastock/Getty Images Pro
– The use of castor oil by a person with very sensitive skin can cause a serious allergic reaction. Allergies may also be caused by individual intolerance to certain components of castor oil.
Before using castor oil for the first time, it is recommended to apply it to a small area of skin. If you have an allergic reaction in a few hours, then castor oil is not for you (at least in its pure form).
– Castor oil should not be used during lactation and pregnancy (especially during the first three months). Although castor oil is actively imposed on the Internet on many sites even during pregnancy, some studies attribute an increased risk of its termination to the use of castor oil.
– Castor oil is contraindicated for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and stomach pain of an unknown nature.
– Castor oil should not be given to children under 12 years of age.
– Castor oil should not be used as a laxative for those who often suffer from diarrhea.
– An overdose of castor oil is a dangerous thing. It is known that Italian henchmen of the fascist regime once tortured prisoners with large amounts of castor oil. This caused severe diarrhea
(sometimes accompanied by vomiting) and dehydration; such torture often led to the death of the unfortunate person.
Finally, you can give the following advice: use cold-pressed oil, which is more effective because it retains most of the beneficial properties. Keep the oil in a dark place out of reach of children. And do not be too upset if castor oil is ineffective or allergic for you personally!
