Orthodox monasteries are built on top of isolated rocks. As an important cultural object, they are protected by UNESCO.
Hermit monks chose the rocks in the X century, but the first monastery was built here only four centuries later. Six buildings have survived to our times, although initially there were more than 20 of them. And all of them are still active.
Traveling here will certainly be interesting not only for religious people. Although for the latter this place is still of great value, the rocks themselves, formed tens of millions of years ago, are an amazing creation of nature, striking in scale and beauty. And if you have already been to Greece and seem to have seen everything, come to Meteora.
How to get
Trains run from Athens (350 kilometers) and Soloniki (250 kilometers) to the city of Kalambaka, from it to the monasteries — 5 kilometers. You can overcome this distance by bus, taxi or on foot.
If you are traveling by rented car, it is more convenient to get directly to the town of Kastraki, located even closer to the attraction: from there it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk to the first monastery.
When to arrive. The opening hours of the monasteries in the winter and summer season are different. In addition, each of them has its own schedule.
Men are recommended to wear trousers, and it is better for women to bring a skirt below the knees and a cape over the shoulders. But, as tourists write, even those who have neglected the dress code are allowed into monasteries.
