Coca-Cola and Pepsi producers have changed the recipe for well-known drinks to avoid labels that warn that these drinks can cause cancer . Manufacturers will now add less of a compound called 4-methylimizadol (4-MEI), which was recently listed as a carcinogen in California.
California is already producing Cola and Pepsi using a new recipe, but the new recipe will soon be rolled out across the US. In Europe, the recipe will remain the same.
Meanwhile, Coca-Cola's management reports that despite the forced innovations, the company itself considers the classification of Cola as a dangerous drink unjustified.
4-methylimidazole entered the list of carcinogens after it was discovered that this compound causes cancer in mice and rats. However, there is still no evidence that 4-methylimidazole is dangerous for humans. In addition, the amount of connection is important. According to the US Food and Drug Administration, in order for a person to receive the dose of 4-methylimidazole that received by the mice during the experiment, he would have to drink more than 1,000 cans of Cola or Pepsi per day.
According to a Coca-Cola spokesperson, “nowhere in the world except California is the presence of 4-methylimidazole in food products not considered hazardous to human health.”
